چکیده
We experimentally investigate the effect of vertical vibrations on brittle behavior fine cohesive powders consisting glass beads 5 μm in diameter. This is an attempt to understand a sole role fluidizing Geldart’s group C powders, which known for posing difficulty while fluidization. find that powder column can be compacted, fractured, and effectively fluidized by increasing strengths external vibrations. process vibration-induced fracturing summarized full experimental phase diagram showing four distinct phases vibrated column: consolidation (CS), static fracture (SF), dynamic (DF), convective (CF). boundary separating consolidated regimes depends dimensionless shaking strength, S. Vertically shaken column of spheres. Onset of fluidization
The onset of surface fluidization of granular material in a vertically vibrated container, z = A cos (ωt), is studied experimentally. Recently, for a column of spheres it has been theoretically found [1] that the particles lose contact if a certain condition for the acceleration amplitude z̈ ≡ Aω/g = f(ω) holds. This result is in disagreement with other findings where the criterion z̈ = z̈crit = c...
متن کاملSpontaneous air-driven separation in vertically vibrated fine granular mixtures.
We report the observation of the spontaneous separation of vertically vibrated mixtures of fine bronze and glass spheres of similar diameters. At low frequencies and at sufficient vibrational amplitudes, a sharp boundary forms between a lower region of glass and an upper region of the heavier bronze. The boundary undergoes various oscillations, including periodic tilting motion, but remains ext...
متن کاملAnomalous Sinking of Spheres due to Local Fluidization of Apparently Fixed Powder Beds.
The sinking of an intruder sphere into a powder bed in the apparently fixed bed regime exhibits complex behavior in the sinking rate and the final depth when the sphere density is close to the powder bed density. Evidence is adduced that the intruder sphere locally fluidizes the apparently fixed powder bed, allowing the formation of voids and percolation bubbles that facilitates spheres to sink...
متن کاملLocation of Microearthquakes Induced by Hydraulic Fracturing
This paper examines the problem of locating microearthquakes induced by hydraulic fracturing using seismic arrival time data. In addition to the use of absolute arrival times measured for individual events, we consider the use of differential arrival times amongst a set of two or more seismic events as a means of constralning their locations relative to one another. Differential arrival times c...
متن کاملPower law velocity fluctuations due to inelastic collisions in numerically simulated vibrated bed of powder
Distribution functions of relative velocities among particles in a vibrated bed of powder are studied both numerically and theoretically. In the solid phase where granular particles remain near their local stable states, the probability distribution is Gaussian. On the other hand, in the fluidized phase, where the particles can exchange their positions, the distribution clearly deviates from Ga...
